The trade behind the work

He learned it from men who would not let a wall go up wrong.

Joe started in landscaping and masonry, and learned both the way they used to be taught — on site, from craftsmen who treated a stone wall as something to put your name to rather than something to get finished by Friday. Everything the company does now grew out of those two trades, and that is still the standard the crews build to, and he is still on the job to see that they do.

It is the difference you cannot see on the day and cannot miss in ten years: how deep the base went, whether the drainage was done properly behind the wall, whether the stone was chosen or just used. Anyone can put stone on the ground. Keeping it true is the trade.

High quality, done once, by people who take the work personally. The standard the crews build to

Where the craft actually shows

The parts of a job nobody photographs.

The base under it.

Excavated to depth and compacted in lifts, so a patio does not move when the ground freezes.

The back of the wall.

Drainage stone and filter fabric behind every retaining wall. It is the cheapest part of the job and the reason walls fail without it.

The stone itself.

Chosen and laid to course by hand — the joints, the faces and the coping are where a mason's eye shows.

The finish.

Grades that run water away from the building, edges cut clean, and the site left as though the crew had never been on it.
